WHY TUNA ARE HERE

Why are tuna found in Crystal Bay?

Warm water, bait, structure and current have to work together. Tuna are fast-moving predators, so today's fish position follows what is happening in the water now.

01

Warm tropical water

The Gulf supports baitfish, squid and other food sources throughout the year.

02

Islands meet deeper water

Reefs and drop-offs connect shallow structure with roughly 30–80 m fishing depths.

03

Currents concentrate bait

Flow around structure can gather food and create hunting lanes for tuna.

04

A seasonal window

August–April more often brings the useful combination of wind, current, temperature and bait.

The season can start earlier or finish later in different years. We judge whether the fish are truly in by looking at continuous catches over recent weeks, not a date alone.

FIND · PRESENT · FIGHT

Find · Present · Fight

A full-day tuna trip leaves time to search bait, read the water, move and change methods.

01

Live-bait drifting

Let live bait move naturally with the current into the active layer.

02

Jigging

Actively search mid and deeper water when current and fish activity suit it.

03

Trolling

Cover a wider area to locate roaming fish and surface activity.

Best records are not a guarantee

Dozens in a peak day, common 5–30 kg fish and a 56 kg club record describe what has happened here. They do not predict the result of your boat.
